The latest in power input tech, with a good number of big brand smartphones now offering this feature. But which models make the cut? Let’s check out what phones have wireless chargers and what you can expect from them.

Introduction: Wireless charging is one of those technologies that many people are not even aware exists. It was first used in 2006 in a device called the Power FONE, designed for emergency calls only.

This special feature required the phone to be placed on top of the FONE’s receiver, which had a charging patch attached to it.

Today, smartphones have embraced wireless charging technology and it’s become one of its signature features. The concept’s benefits lie in its ease of use–a user doesn’t need to plug his or her phone into an outlet to begin charging.

Wireless chargers are also more convenient as they eliminate the need for fussing with phone cases or connectors while charging.

Many wireless chargers can also charge multiple devices at once and can utilize various power sources.

Here’s a look at what wireless charging is and what the best models are. You can also check out our guide to wireless charging, which looks over different kinds of devices and their power output capabilities.

The basics of wireless charging: Wireless chargers are designed to work with specific phones. There are many different types of smartphones, so different models require different types of chargers.

For example, Galaxy S6 phones (like this one) use only “Qi” wireless chargers that work with the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge+, Note 5 and the upcoming Galaxy S7.

What you need to get started: Wireless charging requires a special receiver that’s built into your phone and a wireless charging pad.

The receiver can be either a thin strip that sticks to the back of your phone or an internal piece that's built into your phone's body. Wireless charging pads are simple and look like any other smartphone dock.

Your wireless charger will either have pins or coils on the top of it that “send” power to the receiver in your phone. Placing your phone on top of the pad will charge it, but you may need to take the battery cover off for this model to work correctly (the Galaxy S6 doesn't need this).

What to expect: Because wireless chargers are recent technology, they’re not particularly cheap. The average Samsung Galaxy S6 wireless charger will set you back around $50 and it’s something you should look into if you already have a phone that can use a wireless charger.

A good universal Qi-enabled charger can also be found for between $30 and $70, but there’s no guarantee that it will also work with your phone.

If you want to find one yourself, check out the Anker Wireless Charging Pad or Aeris for instance: theirs is only about $40.
